Bored This Summer? Here’s Where to Find Free or Cheap Fun in Lexington

Let’s be real — summer break sounds fun… until the kids are bored, your wallet’s screaming, and you’ve run out of ideas by week two. 😅 Whether you’re a parent trying to keep the littles entertained, a local looking for low-key weekend plans, or just someone on a budget who still wants to have a good time, this list is for you.

We’ve rounded up the best free and budget-friendly things to do in Lexington, from spraygrounds and concerts to movie nights, festivals, and more. No traveling. No expensive ticket fees. Just real fun — for real people — right here in the Bluegrass.

Free Outdoor Concerts

Central Bank Thursday Night Live — Downtown’s go-to for free live music under the Fifth Third Pavilion every Thursday, 5–8 p.m., through mid-October.

Summer Nights in Suburbia — Free weekly concerts (jazz, bluegrass, indie, folk) at Moondance Amphitheater every Friday through September 12th. In addition to the live music, there are food and drink trucks/vendors. Starts at 7 p.m., gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Southland Jamboree — Free Bluegrass music concert held at 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings during the summer at the Moondance Amphitheater in Beaumont Center. Food trucks are on site. You can find the schedule here.

Community Movies & Kid Events

Friday Flicks at Jacobson Park — Free outdoor films every Friday night in June at Jacobson Park, starting at 7 p.m. Food vendors are on site.

Lexington Public Library Summer — Free summer activities, snacks, and rides via Lextran for kids 18 & younger (June 4–July 25) at all branches.

Storytime at Joseph Beth — Free Storytime & activities for kids Monday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. until August 8th at Joseph Beth Booksellers.

Summer Family Musicals — The Lexington Children’s Theater has a low-cost summer musical for kids of all ages. Cinderella will be performed from July 18th – July 27th. More info can be found here.

Ballet Under the Stars — Professional ballet performances, complete with stage, lighting and costumes at Woodland Park. $9 per person. July 30 – Aug. 3, 2025 at 9 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m.

Nature & Outdoor Adventures

McConnell Springs Park — Explore 2 miles of trails, natural springs, and historic sites—free admission.

UK Arboretum & Botanical Gardens — Open daily at the University of Kentucky; enjoy peaceful gardens, walking paths, and kid-friendly zones.

Lexington Farmers’ Market — The Lexington Farmers’ Market runs Tuesdays-Sundays in four locations across the city. Check out more info here.

Local Spraygrounds — Lexington has five, free spraygrounds for kids of all ages located at Castlewood, Charles Young, Douglass, Jacobson and Masterson Station parks. Check here for locations & hours.

Family Fun & Local Festivals

Summer Playground Days — Free fun at multiple park locations in Lexington all summer. Activities include recreational sports, make-and-take arts and crafts, STEM projects, supervised playground play, and the Park & Play program van. Find the schedule here.

Juneteenth Celebration — Entertainment, food, vendors, and community fellowship celebrating Black American liberation. It takes place Saturday, June 21st at Charles Young Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SoulTeenth Festival — SoulTeenth Fest is the vibrant Juneteenth celebration at the heart of SoulFeast Week—honoring culture through entrepreneurship, culinary artistry, and community.  It takes place on June 21st from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Moondance Amphitheater.

Lexington Pride Festival — A community celebration to empower and bring awareness to the lives of LGBTQIA+ Kentuckians. It takes place June 28th from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. downtown Lexington.

Latino Festival — A celebration of Latin American art and culture in the heart of downtown Lexington, with live music, dance, visual arts and authentic cuisine. It takes place September 19th from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m and September 20th from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Arts, Culture, & History

Kentucky Theatre Summer Classics — Catch free or low-cost classic film screenings every Wednesday night until September at The Kentucky Theatre. Check out more info here.

Bluegrass Creative Market — A pop-up market with free admission, live music, local drink and dessert trucks, giveaways and more. Located at Lexington Green on June 21st & 22nd. For more info check here.

Woodland Art Fair — Featuring food and drink, musical performances throughout the weekend, and nearly 200 of the nation’s finest artists, there’s something for everyone. Takes place August 16th & 17th at Woodland Park.

Explore Downtown — Enjoy free attractions like the thoroughbred statues at Thoroughbred Park, murals, and local art galleries, all downtown.

Fourth of July Festivities

Ice Cream Social — Enjoy a free cool treat, live music, children’s games and activities! Food and beverage concession trucks will also be on-site. This event takes place July 2nd at Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park.

Patriotic Concert — Enjoy a thoughtful program celebrating America. Bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Food trucks will be on site. Takes place at Transylvania University & Gratz Park on July 3rd from 5 – 9 p.m.

Fourth of July Festival & Market — Enjoy live music and children’s activities, while also shopping for arts and crafts. You can also get a good spot to watch the parade. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site. Takes place on July 4th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza & Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park.

Fourth of July Parade — The infamous Fourth of July parade kicks off at noon on July 4th, and will move down Main Street from Midland to Mill Street.
